Heather Campbell
My karate journey began in 2014 when I joined a karate class with my daughter. I was looking for an activity to replace a sport I was no longer able to play due to age and injury. The Shotokan traditional teachings have taught me so much more than I ever thought I was going to learn from martial arts.
I have learned more at karate about who I am and how I present to the world than anywhere else I have looked. I have now come full circle from beginner student hungry for more learning to Black Belt student/teacher, still hungry for learning. My education has begun anew as a black belt, and I look forward to many years of teaching and learning about Shotokan Karate with Traditional Karate Saskatoon and the JKA (Japan Karate Association of Canada). The level of knowledge and the expertise of the instructors is world-class, and it is my honor to play a part in passing this tradition and way of life on to others.
A class for adults, children, and whole families, ours is one of inclusion and welcome. We open our doors and accommodate all students.
Welcome and let your karate journey begin with us, Traditional Karate Saskatoon.
– Sempai Heather
We are a traditional JKA Shotokan Karate dojo with traditional values.
Our Mission is to train, advance, and pass on the knowledge of traditional Shotokan Karate with passion, integrity, and energy.
Our Vision is to help as many people as we can to incorporate a mentally and physically healthy karate way of life.
The Difference
Traditional karate skills are interchangeable and can be used in the class room, playground, workplace, board room, and throughout all aspects of life. Karate is for everybody (especially families), and while it will fulfill short-term goals, it can also fulfill long-term goals. Karate can be a useful addition to your lifestyle.
Self Defense
To be traditional, karate must still hold true to its martial beginnings. The beautiful techniques taught in karate need to be performed powerfully, quickly, and effectively. If required, students should be confident that the skills learned in the dojo could help them in a real life self defense situation.
Self defense is a serious topic, and although karate should be fun, the knowledge that is being taught is potentially dangerous and even lethal. For this reason, the dojo kun (a set of five mottos often recited in JKA Shotokan dojos around the world) is stressed above all.
Rules (Kun)
The dojo kun (or school rules) provides us with the underlying philosophy of karate.
- Seek perfection of character
- Be faithful
- Endeavor
- Respect others
- Refrain from violent behavior
